This is very difficult. I do not want to start judging anyone; That is God’s job but I find myself wanting to say something in the hope that others may be having similar feelings and thoughts. You see I think that we- the world- have done something fundamentally wrong. Lets not go into climate change at this stage but does anyone else agree that people have become a ‘throwaway’ society? In just the past 40 years I have experienced a concerning trend away from having household appliances repaired to throwing a good number of , particularly electrical items in the rubbish, when many of these goods could have quite easily have been refurbished. We cannot start blaming certain countries for producing products at basement prices; I think the problem reaches far deeper than pricing alone. What is wrong with having a 5 year old mixmaster repaired to continue working ‘as new’? And Why on earth do you then need to buy a new one? Lets remove the money from the question. What is wrong with having a 10 year old television if it is still working? I say- Nothing! but there are many who have to buy the latest and best on the market just for the sake of having the newest model.
I would be almost certain that most people would have a mobile phone that is less than 18 months old. Some families upgrade their phones by helping out their children by passing on the recent model to the sibling and keeping a newer model for the parents and many people simply require the latest technology for work requirements. There is nothing wrong with any of that. My concern is way young people are set up to fail by the marketing gurus who promote the ‘get it now’ and try to work out how you can possibly pay for it later. That whole system is flawed. How many 17 or 18 year olds have the discipline to put enough away every week to cover 5 different payment plans when they were sold goods by the smooth talking shop assistant who convinced them that they ‘had to have’ it- and oh but it is only ? each week for such a short time. Well! There are many desperate people who probably wish they didn’t have to pay that ? every week now because they may have lost their job or the cost of living has risen more than we could have expected.
If you are looking for a happy and healthy life you are not going to find it in the self-centred activities that this world has to offer but you will find satisfaction, harmony, peace and happiness in a life of service to God and He promised that we would live eternally without any crime, sickness, wars or illness,
